Dr Madison Godfrey is a writer, editor and educator. They live on Whadjuk Noongar land with a rescue cat named Sylvia. Madison has performed poetry at the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall, St Paul’s Cathedral, and Glastonbury Festival.

In recognition of their leadership and community advocacy, Madison was awarded the 2021 Western Australian Youth Award for ‘Creative Contributions’ to the state. They are a previous recipient of the Kat Muscat Fellowship, the Varuna Flagship Fellowship, and the Tom Collins Poetry Prize. In 2023 Madison was shortlisted for the Western Australian Premier’s Fellowship, which indicates their impact within local literature.

In 2019, Madison worked with Propel Youth Arts WA as the Creative Coordinator of Youth Week WA. This role epitomises Madison’s ongoing commitment to creating and delivering exciting writing programs, both locally and in-collaboration with interstate organisations (including Express Media, Varuna the National Writer’s House, the State Library of Victoria).

Madison has a PhD in prose poetry and gendered performances, from Curtin University. The thesis received a Vice Chancellor’s Commendation, and was awarded the 2023 Niall Lucy Award for research excellence in creative and critical theory. From 2020 onwards, Madison has taught at Curtin University, where they take immense pride in supporting their students towards achieving publication success in the creative industry.

In 2024, Madison was awarded a ‘Performance & Creative Research Fellowship’ from The Forrest Research Foundation, to research the feminist potential of the contemporary verse novel. In 2025, Madison was awarded a Red Room Poetry Fellowship.

Madison’s recent book Dress Rehearsals was announced as most anticipated books of 2023 by Refinery29, RUSSH Magazine, and Sydney Morning Herald. Published by Allen & Unwin Imprint JOAN in March 2023, the poetry collection has been described as “a poetic manifesto of selfhood: fiercely punk and undeniably powerful” (ArtsHub). Dress Rehearsals was listed as one of the best books of 2023 by The West Australian and The Guardian.

As of early-2025, Madison’s coffee order is a cappuccino with oat milk.
